22.1.16

We didn't speak the same language, not one word. But somehow we found love in each other. She wanted a daughter, I needed a mother. Briefly we held those places for each other. She put me to bed each night tenderly placing her calloused hands on my cheeks, giving me the comfort of a motherly caress. She woke me up each morning with sweet tea. I held her hand as we walked into the fields where we spent mornings picking millet. When I cut my finger on the rusted blade dulled by lifetimes of fieldwork, she wiped away the blood. She instinctively held me close, squeezed it tight, blew her healing breath on it. She smiled at me - amused by my ignorance, my lack of still. My hands so privileged, so soft, so fragile, hers so rough, so calloused, so strong - somehow they fit together so perfectly. I'd love to hear what you have to say, about what I have to say.
